Year In Review Video
Goal: Produce video highlighting important news of the past year; create associated web page with additional content; distribution
Roles: Producer, Editor (video) • Content Design/Direction (webpage) • Project management/execution (homepage, emails, social media)
Collaborators: Director of News and Editorial Services, Senior Web Producer, Director of Editorial Services and Publications
The video and web page is a project I proposed to my vice president in 2016. Since then it has become a permanent part of the communications plan. Released in early January, it is is a reminder to the RPI community of all of the important and amazing things we accomplished in the past year.
Every year I try to improve the video either based on a number of factors. This year I wanted to use the video as an entry point to a web page with more robust content including: a written story with links and relevant curated content including top media hits; top videos produced by our news department. People were driven to the landing page from the home page and emails sent out to the campus community and alumni. Additionally the video was uploaded to our Institute social media pages with a link to the webpage.
Holiday Video
Goal: Produce the yearly video celebrating the holiday season; distribute to community
Roles: Producer, Writer, Videographer, Editor, Project management/execution (landing page, emails, social media)
Collaborators: All the amazing people who agreed to be in the video, Director of Editorial Services and Publications
In 2016 my vice president charged me with elevating the Institute's holiday video. Only in existence for two years, the previous videos were simply animated versions of the Institute's printed holiday card (which was a building illustration.) Seeking to create project that was creatively independent from the printed card, I was tasked to "be creative." The result is the 2016 video where I had one of the campus a capella groups arrange a custom mashup of "Winter Wonderland" and the "RPI Alma Mater." With the exception of the 2019 video (above) I have collaborated with the Institute's videographer to plan locations and shoot the video. I took this opportunity to focus on student groups like the Rensselyrics and the RPI Pep Band. In 2019, I wanted to take a different direction and focus on all of the great things about RPI in a less polished format. Due to a major setback, with little time remaining I had to plan and shoot most of the scenes myself. Everyone on campus was gracious with either connecting me to the right person or scheduling people and spaces which while a whirlwind of shoot schedules and planning; was successfully executed. This is one of my favorite videos because of the interactions with the campus community and their willingness to participate.
Commencement Videos
Goal: Produce the recap video of the Commencement ceremony; distribute on social media
Roles: Producer, Editor, Project management/execution (landing page, emails, social media)
Collaborators: Multimedia Service/Video Services (provided video footage), freelance photographer (still imagery)
The wrap up, Dean's videos, and class messages are part of a larger social media campaign aimed at celebrating the graduating class. (I also manage and lead that campaign). I conceived of the Dean's videos as both a compliment to the leadup social media campaign; but also content to be used in our live Twitter coverage of the commencement ceremony. As each school begins to cross the stage to receive their diplomas (yes, we still do that!) the videos are posted on the live Twitter feed. A perfect way to enhance the live ceremony and make it worth the dean's time. All of the dean's willingly participate and make time in their schedules. I pick a theme for the year; like this year's giving a piece of advice. Then I coach them through the remarks they have prepared for continuity and length. I also collaborate with them on the location they would like to record the message in--usually trying to highlight a facility, lab, or space within their schools. The messages from the class are a particular challenge in that it is very difficult to get a large portion of the graduating class in one place at the right time frame. I worked with the class dean and the commencement events department to determine that "Status Check" (where the graduates pick up their commencement tickets) was the best time to capture the most amount of graduates in one location. Unfortunately, the physical location is less than ideal because of a large open room with a lot of noise and the unpredictability of May weather in the northeast. So we decided to do a photo montage project instead and found that the students were more apt to participate in a photo than video and the whole project (in the midst of many deliverables surrounding commencement on my end) was easier to manage and produce.
